On Friday, the Michigan Supreme Court upheld the life sentences given to April Kurtz, 31, and her boyfriend Justin Howard, 19, back in 2007. Circuit Judge Thomas Wilson punctuated and reiterated Grant's original sentences Thursday by detailing what prosecutors label as the most horrendous rape they have encountered.
"The court is deviating upward because the guidelines do not adequately reflect the victim was an 11-year-old with cerebral palsy and (had) the mental capacity of a 7-year-old,'' Wilson said. "The mother held her legs open so that he could penetrate her, and the defendant took sexually explicit pictures.''

Wilson said there is little chance either can be rehabilitated, and they always would be a danger to the general public. Each has been a problem prisoner, Wilson said. The Department of Corrections has cited Howard for 14 major misconduct episodes, while Kurtz has six (2 were sexual in nature).
I don't know about anyone else but I find it disturbing that a mother could do this to their child. Any child for that matter. What makes the whole thing even more disturbing is that there is a disabled child involved who has no way to work through the abuse she suffered. Just like her mother, she has received a life sentence as well. I am glad the sentences held up - they deserve it for the horrors they inflicted on this poor child.
