LSU Wins Sixth Baseball Title

They did it!

The LSU Tigers defeated the Texas Cowgirls Longhorns 11-4 tonight to capture the 6th College World Series Championship in program history. The Tiger capped off an amazing season in which they not only won this title but they also won the SEC regular season and SEC tournament titles as well.

It was only fitting that Louis Coleman, the unquestionable heart of this team, struck out the side in the bottom of the 9th to secure the victory. What a way to redeem himself after a rough outing in game 1.

The Tigers finished the season with a 56-17 record.

From Worst to First!

I'm not one to really get into the baseball playoffs. While it is probably my least favorite sport, sometimes I do get drawn into watching a game when it is exciting. It has been nice to follow the Tampa Bay Rays this season. They changed their name, brought up a good group of young players and systematically dumped the competition. Last season, they had 97 losses. Pitiful. In fact, before this season the Ray had never won more than 70 games in a season. In short - they were HORRID. But this was their year. They finished this year's regular season with 97 victories. An amazing turnaround and an improbable dream has been realized.

The Tampa Bay Rays celebrate their first ALCS Championship

For the first time in a long time, someone other than the Yankees or Red Sox won the AL Eastern Division. To top off a great season, the Ray used their home field advantage to defeat the Red Sex tonight 3-1 and move onto the World Series against the Phillies. I'm sure we're all confident that the Ray should beat the Phillies in 4 or 5 games. In fact, an ESPN Fan poll has 68% of voters say that the Rays will win. Congrats to Matt Garza on winning the ALCS Most Valuable Player award after going 2-0 in the series and only giving up 8 hits while striking out 14 and posting a 1.38 ERA! Awesome numbers against an outstanding team like Boston.

Editor's Note : Sorry John. The Rays didn't listen to you. Ha!

GatorNation Stunned

Looking at the menu of college football games this week, I bet no one thought that Ole Miss had a chance against Florida. Apparently, people were wrong. Ole Miss' defense stood up pretty well against the Florida offense and the Gator defense put up a pretty weak showing for most of the game. Just when you thought Florida had tied the game up, Ole Miss blocked an extra point attempt with 3 minutes left in the game. The end came when Tim Tebow came up short on 4th and 2 with yet another stop by the Rebels.

First USC goes down - now Florida - Could TCU knock off Oklahoma next?

LSU Pulls it Out..Auburn Goes Limp

Just when it looked like it was certain that Auburn was going to end up with the win, LSU's freshman quarterback, Jarrett Lee, woke up. Coach Les Miles made a big mistake putting Lee in at the end of the first half just when Andrew Hatch was playing well and the mistake cost LSU.

LSU was down 14-3 at halftime! In the second half, LSU came out strong but before long Hatch was knocked out of the game with a mild concussion. Even the announcers groaned at the idea that Lee would be finishing out this game. What a difference halftime made! Lee came out and completed his first pass... and then his second... before long, LSU had scored a touchdown. The game was back and forth but LSU managed to pull out a 26-21 win in a hostile Auburn stadium. Considering Lee started out 0-5 passing and 0 yards of offense in the first half, he ended up with 11-22 passing and 182 yards in the 2nd half - that's an amazing turnaround. It was definitely a team effort as three different Tigers scored touchdowns but I'd give the game ball to Charles Scott who rushed for 132 yards against a stellar Auburn defense.

GEAUX TIGERS!!!

LSU-Auburn

Yes, Auburn Fans - You should be VERY scared!

Fun times at the Olympics

I've always wondered why people find wrestling so enjoyable...

I guess now we know why!

A Sad Thing

It's always sad when adults do the wrong thing. In youth sports, adults are supposed to be teaching kids about sportsmanship and fair play. It's sad when its the adults who need to be taught about sportsmanship.

Apparently, in New Haven, CT, there is a kid in an 8-10yo league who is "too good" to pitch against other teams. The kid, who is only 9, was even banned from pitching by the league administration! Well, the team ignored the ban and when he took the mound, the other team left and forfeited. How is that teaching our kids good sportsmanship? Also, as a result the league has said they will disband the team and redistribute the players.

Now the question is, is this really about him being too good? The answer may be no. Apparently, the kid was asked to join the defending championship team and he and his parents declined the offer. Now, his team is 8-0 and headed to the playoffs. Also, the defending champions are sponsored by the employer of one of the league administrators. Seems to be shenanigans going on here! And yes, there is a possible lawsuit against the league being discussed.

Not All Fun and Games

I'm a big fan of the Olympics....2 weeks of sports - yes! As we all know, we got to watch lots of records and great accomplishments. Not everything at the Olympics was good though. I'm not talking about the ceremonies - don't get me started on those. I am a big believer in good sportsmanship... The first big disappointment was when a wrestler threw down his bronze medal in anger about not making the finals. At least, I think that's why! Ha!

The one thing that really irked me was the behavior of a tae-kwon-do athlete from Cuba. Now we say Usain Bolt from Jamaica act badly after winning but I think it is safe to say that it was youth that made hime not realize his actions were in poor fashion. That can't be the excuse for the Cuban athlete - this was his THIRD Olympics. On top of that, he won a medal in Sydney in 2000! He should know better. Here is the very lasting image of the athlete in question :

I hope that others are as disturbed by this as I am. The person getting kicked is the REFEREE! Yes, you heard it right! Why would he do this? Because the referee disqualified him! It was well withing the rules and the competitor knew it. Then his coach accused the ref of taking a bribe from the competition to fix the match. Now both athlete and coach are facing life bans from the sport and the olympics. It is so sad that people could be such poor sports.

Hmmm he is in Cuba. Would they kill him for embarrassing the country? HA!

What is the definition of Dominance?

What's the answer? It's Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh!

The US Beach Volleyball duo just won their second-straight Gold medal in the Olympics. Not only is that unheard of - but they have won 108 straight matches! How insane is that? That's not all! This was their 100th career tournament victory together and their record together is 742-50. Now THAT is a herculean feat!
