Excitement in Facebook land!

I know I have talked about me new Facebook addiction before but I have to say I'm really glad I decided to sign up for it. Last night I was talking with people I haven't seen since elementary school! It's nice to find out that you're not the only dork wondering about people you haven't seen since the 4th grade. ha! It's also great to see how our lives have evolved and how different we are since the last time we last saw each other.

That's not even the reason I am so excited. Well, it is part of the reason. They have this 25 random things meme going around. At first I thought it was going around like the common cold - but I am really glad I decided to post my own! I even had trouble coming up with 25 things about myself that are remotely interesting. One thing I put in there was that I was searching for my former best friend Melissa. We had been great friends through high school and into college. We even got our first real jobs together. More importantly, she was the first person I came out to.

Well, someone who is on my facebook page read that and it turns out she is close friends with Melissa's younger sister! She passed it on to her and Michele called her sister at work to tell her I was looking for her and (like I did) she started crying. It's nice to know I was that missed - Lord knows I have been missing her like crazy. Now I have a way to contact her!

I know I sound like a dork - but if you haven't signed up for Facebook, you really should. It is nothing like MySpace (my readers know how I detest MyWhore) and you never know who you will find!

Good Thoughts Needed

Couple things going on ...

1. Brother-in-law is going through a stressful time ... Hoping all goes well on that front.

2. Darin's formal job offer should be coming on Tuesday ... Will be nice to have money coming in again and we can get the move to PA on track. Yankeeland here we come!

3. Depression SUCKS. I'm tired of pills. I'm tired of doctors. I'm tired of needing help dressing myself. I'm tired of being a burden.

4. Darin won't be here to help me get dressed for like a month. Any volunteers?

Paula Abdul ... a bigger head than a blimp.

Apparently Miss Abdul gave an interview where she basically takes credit for revolutionizing music video and takes credit for Rihanna's and Beyonce's success, as well for others. All because she thought to put a cartoon cat in a video back in the 1980's.

Um. Didn't Paula tell us she is NOT a drunk? Seems to me she is drinking or smoking something pretty damn strong.

Says the American Idol judge, "My videos stand the test of time. They are like the almanac for every performer. Even Rhianna has come up to me and said 'I hope you don't mind.' And Beyonce. You can see the influence of what I've done. It's really fun to see that I've left a mark. It was my idea to create an animated character. It takes a lot of focus, a lot time, and a lot of money."

Got news for Paula - they've been making animated characters for a lot longer than you've been around. Is she trying to get herself fired from Idol for embarrassing the show by being stupid?

Are we ready for Change?

Today I was very angered. A good friend of mine posted a blog showing disappointment in some things that President Obama has done in his first days in office. For this, he was attacked. I didn't realize that if we have a differing opinion it automatically makes us the enemy. When did that happen? Just because someone disagrees with you or says something you don't like does not make THEM wrong. Perhaps it is you that is wrong. Perhaps no one is wrong. That's why they call it an OPINION.

I was under the impression that this country was founded in part so that people could voice their opinion in an open way. Isn't that what freedom of speech is? Why is it wrong to say you don't like something?

People are calling for change in this country. Are we ready though? If things are to change, perhaps we should begin with ourselves.

Oscar Noms

Congratulations to the people associated with the film Milk on the Best Picture/Best Screenplay nominations! Also, Good luck to Sean Penn (Best Actor) and Josh Brolin (Supporting Actor)! All are greatly deserved.

If you haven't seen Milk yet -- you need to!

Obama

OK. I have personally tried to keep politics off of my blog. But after hearing nothing on the news except for the inauguration, I feel like I should say something - whether people like it or not.

I personally am not in love with Obama. I think we should wait until he actually does something before people get so enamoured with him. I have news for you - it is not Obama himself everyone loves. It is the idea of change - of some sort of utopia that is supposedly going to happen when he becomes President.

I am not saying I don't like him or that I think he won't do great things. I just think it is more responsible of the American people to wait for him to do something - anything really - before granting him sainthood.

Golden Globes

I don't usually watch shows like the Golden Globes (no one I like ever wins) but I did this year due to lack of anything else to watch (I have 4 channels). Here are some of my observations of this year's show.

Anne Hathaway was HOT!

Drew Barrymore - Why did she decide to do a throwback to Dynasty with her hair? I think she used a couple cans of hairspray to make it that big and it looked windblown as well! Fire your stylist!!

Brooke Burke and Tiki Barber on the Red Carpet - Couldn't they find anyone more interesting and talented to do the show?? The only thing they could ask anyone is "Who are you looking to see tonight?" Sheesh!

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens - Beauty and the Beard.

Maggie Gyllenhaal talking about how sad it is regarding Heath Ledger not being there - ummmm it is sad that his daughter will grow up without a father but he OD'ed on drugs! It's not like he had cancer or anything.

Miley Cyrus - GROW UP! It's not classy to stick your tongue out to the camera when they announce your nomination for a Golden Globe.

Miss Golden Globe - Rumer Willis ... WHY??

Anna Paquin -- WTG! So deserved for True Blood!!

Blake Lively and Rainn Wilson - do NOT bring these two back to present an award. They were either too drunk or too dumb to get it right.

30 Rock - I'm sorry. Awards shows are NOT to give awards to programs no one is watching. No one is watching this show yet it wins everything. Why is that?

Finally, why do movies that haven't even been released to theaters or anything win awards already? I would think they should go up for consideration AFTER they've been in the theaters!

Having Fun with Seniors

Crazy things can happen. A man who had been receiving the AARP monthly newsletter for years didn’t get one for one time. He did what most of us would do – call the 800 number and get it rectified. He was NOT expecting what he received.

1000 copies of the same newsletter! That was almost 300 lbs of mail! The mailman apologized but since his name was on them he had to deliver them to him. Does anyone really need 1000 copies of the same newsletter?? Calls to the local AARP office uncovered the interesting fact that the office hadn’t received their copies yet – almost 1000 normally. Go Figure.

Barbara vs Rosie!

I saw the funniest thing on The View this morning (no I do not usually watch the show. Currently our satellite is not working and we only have four channels so I happened to switch to it.) I am NOT a fan of this show – especially since the way they treated Rosie O’Donnell. Apparently the wife of Don Imus (the radio guy who made racist remarks) has written a book about eating/cooking organically and was talking about the cows they own.

I was interested in their cow. Well, the name of the cow. When they got their first cow, they named it “Barbara Walters”. In fact all the cows have names of famous people. Well “Barbara” is now a grandmother – to a calf named “Rosie”. Now that is hilarious. For those who don’t know – there has been a battle of words ever since Rosie quit The View after the infamous argument with Elizabeth Hasselback. Talk about irony!

Carson Daly - What happened?!

OK. Does anyone else remember when Carson Daly was cute? Is it just me or does he look creepy now? I was just surfing the 4 channels I have and I came across his late night show. He used to look cute and healthy – now he just looks like he did a lot of crack or something. This is the same guy who dated Tara Reid (when she was popular) and other models… Someone help him!

Pac Man

I just saw an interview on NFL Today with Adam “Pacman” Jones. Yes, this is a sports posting – run now while you can! (Just kidding) For those of you who are not familiar with this person, he is a football player in the NFL. He is only 25 years old and has already served a major suspension from playing in the league and is likely to receive another suspension or ban for his behavior. Mainly – he is a criminal! How many chances should one person receive? If he was just a non-celebrity, he would have been fired and that was that.

He has continued to act like a criminal. Shootings, drugs, guns, you name it, he has been linked to it. Even after his troubles, the Dallas Cowboys brought him on to the team and within days he was incurring more legal problems. While this is enough to outrage me, it wasn’t what really upset me. In the interview they asked him if he had any remorse for the things he has done. Listening to him speak, I wonder how he managed to graduate high school let alone get into college. He doesn’t even seem like he knows what the word remorse is! How is it that people like this are given multi-million dollar contracts to play a game?

I would love to know why these athletes made it to this point where they are grossly overpaid. When did playing ONE basketball game become worth $30,000? Teachers have trouble getting that salary for one YEAR. I am a fan of sports but I do not think any player is worth getting $400 million for 10 years. How can they justify that? Look at the Yankees who spent over $400 million to get 3 players. We live in a time where people are losing their jobs, their homes, their hope but these athletes can make more in one month than most will make in their lifetime. Something needs to change and it needs to change soon.

MILK Does a (gay)Body Good

Tonight I watched the movie Milk. If you haven’t watched this movie yet – it is time to crawl out from under your rock and find a way to see it! Normally when a movie comes out with “critical acclaim” I try to avoid it. Having known who Harvey Milk was, I ignored my usual reaction and downloaded the movie to watch it. It may be the best movie I have ever seen. Not for the filming or anything but merely for the subject matter. Also, I was surprised how well Sean Penn portrayed a gay man – not “forcing” the character and ending up as a straight actor playing a gay-ish man (as Heath Ledger did in Brokeback Mountain).

If you are gay, straight or whatever you need to know about the life of Harvey Milk. I know that people were promoting this as a “gay film” but after watching the movie, you’ll see just how important his work was not only for gay rights but also for the preservation of universal civil rights. For those who do not know who Milk was, he was the first openly gay individual to be elected to public office. The movie is about his fight to win the office but it is about so much more than that.

Gay people today can thank Harvey Milk in part for what protection we have today. He came about in a time when Anita Bryant and fascist homophobes were on a crusade to make this a country when someone could be fired, evicted and openly discriminated against for simply being a homosexual or a gay-supporter. I think the thing I got from the movie most was how one person could inspire not only the disenfranchised but also the unwilling. One of the people Milk inspired was a young boy named Cleave Jones – someone who had no interest in doing anything more than turning “tricks” on Castro Street. Not only did he inspire him, Jones ended up joining Milk’s ‘inner circle’ and went on to create the NAMES Project (Aids Quilt). To me, that is what I find so inspiring about what Milk as able to do.

Milk’s message was clear – if “they” know one of us, they will care. Maybe that is what it will take for people to accept the idea of gay marriage/domestic rights. People do not want to take a stand if they are not directly affected themselves. Maybe if people knew their sibling, friend, parent, etc was gay it would make them get off their butt and vote to preserve civil rights for all – not just for themselves.

I'm Back (Slow version!)

Well we are now in Louisiana. Darin will be here for a week or so before going up to start work in Pennsylvania while I will stay here probably for a month afterward. We think the realtor has found us a home - whether it will be available when we need it who knows though. I just have dial up now (netzero) and god help me it is sooooo much slower than the cable modem! However, it is better than nothing!

While I have been offline, I did write some blog posts - I will just copy and paste them but remember they are not in real time so the tenses may be different than if I wrote them today or later. Y'all know what I mean.

Help!

Okay - Here is the deal folks. I will be offline probably for the next couple weeks. The reason is that we are moving to Pennsylvania! Unfortunately we need to move our things to my in-laws for a couple weeks while Darin goes to PA for a gourmet weekend chef spot and finds a house for us to rent. Then we will head up there so he can start his new job. Hopefully I will be able to leech on to a network but since we will be in a semi-rural area I doubt I will be able to.

So here is why I say help. I want to re-do my website. This includes a name change! While I am gone, please leave me comments with suggestions for a new name. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Also, if you are someone who is good at html and would like to volunteer to make me a template, that would be great too!

If I'm not around - y'all enjoy the beginning of 2009! I'll miss all of y'all!
